Martha Jo Herrington Shows, 86, passed away Sept. 8, 2017. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Henry Odell Shows; parents Joseph Bryant and Bessie Ford Herrington; granddaughter Kimberly Lea Shows; parents-in-law Milton and Peggy Walters and Henry Monroe (Bud) Shows; and sister-in-law Imogene Shows Grow.
Visitation is scheduled for noon-2 p.m. Monday at Ellisville Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Linda Foshee conducting the service. Burial will be in Burruss Memorial Universalist cemetery immediately following the service.
Martha was born on Aug. 5, 1931 in the Union Community (Ellisville). She was a graduate of Jones County Agricultural High School (1947), Jones County Junior College (1949) and received B.S., master’s and specialist degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. She was employed by the Jones County school system for 35 years, where she served as a teacher for five years at Johnson, Whitfield and Moselle prior to becoming a counselor at Ellisville High School and South Jones High School.
After retirement in 1986, she worked as a supervisor on the National Assessment for Educational Progress, a study of the U.S. Department of Education. Martha belonged to several professional organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma, Pine Belt Counselors Association, Mississippi Counselors Association and National Personal and Guidance Association. She was a member of Burruss Memorial Universalist Church and Our Home Unitarian Universalist Church. Her religion brought her much joy and happiness.
Martha is survived by her son Joseph Milton “Joe Milt” Shows (Patricia) of Ellisville; grandson Dr. J. Ryan Shows (Brandi); granddaughter Elizabeth (Freddy); great-grandchildren Dom, Alexis and Sophia Shows, all of Baton Rouge, La.; nieces Robbie Scott (John) of Montgomery, Ala., and Deborah Copeland (Harrell) of Snellville, Ga.; and one special cousin she considered a sister, Carolyn Ware (Tom).
