Laurel native Martha Patterson, affectionately known to family and friends as “Markie,” passed away of natural causes with peace and grace at age 71 on April 2, 2018 at her home in Houston, Texas.
Markie was born on April 6, 1946, the second child of Rudolph G. and Frances Weaver Patterson. She grew up attending the First Baptist Church with her family and was educated in the Laurel public schools, graduating from R.H. Watkins High School in 1964.
Markie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Mississippi College in 1968. She began her teaching career in Pensacola, Fla., and moved to Houston in 1973. For the next 30 years, Markie was a classroom teacher and guidance counselor with the Houston Independent School District at Betsy Ross Elementary School. Markie continued her professional training in Houston and earned a Master of Arts degree in educational guidance and counseling from the University of Houston.
Markie was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Houston for 45 years, serving her church in numerous capacities, including Sunday school teacher, Bible Study teacher and member of the church choir. Memorial services honoring Markie’s life were at the First Baptist Church of Houston on April 13, 2018.
Markie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Ann Lea Webbe; and her brother Paul Patterson. She is survived by her niece Elizabeth Smith (Chris), her great-nephew Ricky West and her great-niece Katie Beth West, all of Indiana; and a host of loving friends, including many lifelong friends from Laurel.
Markie was a Godly woman and a gentle soul who was a friend to all. Her kind heart and sweet spirit will be greatly missed.
