Coach Willie C. Jones was born Aug. 13, 1929, and passed away on Feb. 6, 2018.
His wake will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Friendship Baptist Church (116 Custom Ave., Laurel). His funeral service will be at noon Saturday at St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church (512 South 6th Ave., Laurel). Pastor Kirk Keller will be officiating. Interment will be at Nora Davis Memorial Cemetery (1635 Eastview Drive, Laurel).
He was a long-time coach, community mentor, leader and friend to many. He was a graduate of Oak Park High School, where he began his football career. He furthered his education and football success at Alcorn State University and received his master’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi .
He taught at Southside High School in Heidelberg, Tennessee State University, Mississippi Valley State University and finished his career at Heidelberg High School.
Coach Jones was co-founder and organizer of the Little League Baseball in the Queensburg community, he served as a board member of the Laurel Housing Authority, a board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Laurel, a coach of Pee Wee Football and as a bailiff for the Jones County Youth Court. He loved playing and coaching the Laurel Black Cats, a semi-professional baseball team located in Laurel.
He leaves to cherish his memory three children — son Stanley Jones of Hattiesburg and two daughters, Cheryl Jones Kendall and Tonya Jones Dedeaux of Atlanta; special friend and long-time companion Charlene Toney of Laurel; and a host of family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Willie C. Jones, Class of 1957 to Alcorn State University Foundation University, Inc., 1000 ASU Drive # 810, Lorman, MS 39096-7500; designated for student scholarships.
